Ranger Training in South Africa & Botswana

Join EcoTraining, the pioneer in field guide training, in the famous Big 5 Kruger National Park or the Northern Tuli Game Reserve and get to know the unique nature and wildlife of Southern Africa. Experienced instructors will introduce you to the secrets of the wild, and help you to explore the bush using all your senses.

Our game rangers are not only experienced safari guides, they also train apprentice rangers for the African bush. We have chosen the most interesting elements of a game ranger’s training, so you will only learn the exciting stuff and have a unique experience.

We usually set off to explore with the first light of day – either on foot or by safari vehicle. You will be introduced to the principles of game tracking, animal behaviour and botany. In the African bush you will be learning by doing – by seeing, hearing, smelling and sometimes even tasting. You will need to be alert, as the Big 5 move freely throughout the reserve. Adventurous and exciting – an experienced game ranger will be at your side at all times.

If on one day you concentrate on the behaviour of wild animals and safety in their presence, on another you will explore the richness of the bird and reptile worlds. You will learn about the reserve’s geology and the conservation taking place, as well as its plant life and how to use both as a source of food and natural healing.

One of the highlights is surely the bush hike with a night spent under the vast, starry African skies. Around the camp fire you will learn about the fascinating constellations before you fall asleep under your “star roof”.

You will live in an unfenced tented camp in which wild animals can roam freely. This is an exciting program in which you will learn much about the unique flora and fauna of Southern Africa, experience the wilderness with all your senses and at the same time, make an important contribution to community or conservation work.

The camp in South Africa

The camp is situated in the Makuleke concession at the Kruger National Park. The camp is situated between the Limpopo and Luvuvhu Rivers. This is a true wilderness area, steeped in history and situated in the remotest part of Kruger in one of the most biologically diverse areas.

Guests are accommodated in simple but comfortable thatched, tented units placed on wooden decks in the shade of large nyala trees. Each unit has an en-suite bathroom consisting of a shower, washbasin with hot running water and a flush toilet and also has a veranda.

The camp in  Botswana

Our Mashatu Camp is located in the land of Giants in the Tuli reserve of Botswana bordering South Africa. Tuli forms a key part of the proposed Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area.

The camp consists of 10 simple dome tents, each with two mattresses with pillows (two guests per tent). There are shared bathroom facilities and a central communal area overlooking the dry river bed.
