experience – discover – change
“Elela” is a Tsonga word which means “to see clearly”. The Tsonga are an ethnic group in South Africa, and Elela is used as a girl’s name. We have chosen the name, not only for the beauty of its sound, but also because it expresses our mission so well.
We have more than 10 years experience in tourism and the non-profit sector in Southern Africa, and we look forward to supporting you professionally in your planning of a “different” holiday. Our programs are designed to give you a deeper insight into the country, and help you to actively experience “wild life” in Southern Africa. Once immersed in the wilderness, you will notice how you gradually gain distance from your daily life, start to observe your surroundings more intensively with your senses, and experience yourself anew, gaining clarity and insight.
At the same time, we would like to give something back to the world together with you. “Volunteer tourism” is a much used and sadly often misused term. We know our partners and their projects personally. We guarantee that you will be supporting real and sustainable wildlife and community projects when you actively participate in our wildlife programmes, such as the one on the Garden Route.
Whilst the emphasis in our camp in Greater Kruger is on learning and experience, you will be living on community land, and your accommodation costs alone will contribute to the community’s income. Even those of us who come from Europe know how valuable such an experience can be for the traveller too.
Your advantages with Elela Africa
We know all our partners on a personal level. All programs are developed in conjunction with us, and are therefore unique. Our wildlife programs are led by experienced rangers in the camps.
If you work as a volunteer in one of the programs, you can be assured that you work on authentic projects and contribute to the wildlife conservation in South Africa.
Many of the agencies which promote voluntary work or volunteer travel are based in Europe. We believe in having a local presence, as here we have personal contact with our partners and we can be contacted during your stay in Cape Town.
Would you like to get a taste of the life of a ranger and do some voluntary work, but have outgrown the student backpacker lifestyle? Elela’s partners would like to hear from people who already have some life experience, while offering comfortable accommodation combined with adventure.
We place great value on personal service and thus we recommend small groups. In our camps will be a maximum of 8 or 16 people. Just right for a combination of a personal, unique experience and a fun group atmosphere.
